8 Quick Decluttering Solutions: 1-4

For your Spring Decluttering pleasure, I’ve put together some product ideas:  simple solutions to go from chaos to calm in every area of the house.

But before you run out to the store or begin clicking madly online, make sure you assess the area, to identify:

1) What can go (anything old, dirty, broken, useless or unnecessary – get rid of it)

2) Volume (how much you have left – that you need to store)

For Your Drawers

1. Drawer Dividers

Avoid digging through a jumble of stuff to find what you need. When everything has a home, you can access it quickly upon opening the drawer.

Conveniently found at department stores like Target, or on sale now at The Container Store. Measure the drawer(s) before you buy, and choose based on the different shapes of things you need to divide up into their own little sections. Or choose one with several dividers to stick in a drawer – couldn’t be easier.

For Your Cupboards

2. Shelf Extenders

Think you need a bigger kitchen? Don’t let half of your cupboard space go to waste – access it vertically. Again, you’ll want to
measure, and know what items they’ll be used for so you can pick the right design. Also available at The Container Store and some departments stores.

Stack dishes, plastic ware, pantry items, you name it.

For Your Countertop/Desktop

3. Countertop/Desktop Filing

Reclaim your work surface. Having clear horizontal space is key to the ability to think clearly and creatively.

Gather up all those papers spread out on the kitchen counter or desktop and sort them. Then stick them in labeled files so you can easily pull what you need. Make sure to label one “Urgent” and put at the front. Make it a habit to check this one each day for any urgent to-dos. The Container Store has by far the best selection and quality I’ve seen, but you can also check Target and OfficeMax.

Or Purchase My Active Desktop Filing System. Only $36,
complete with hanging and sub file folders.

For Your Tabletop

4. Trays

Tray it up! There’s something comforting about pulling several things that may otherwise look cluttery together in a defined space. Plus it’s easy to move and change out items as you change.

Make use of one on your dining room, coffee, side or bedside table. Display only attractive things you love – special objects mixed in with magazines and books. (Well, and I guess you could put the remote there too.) Another favorite place for finding these is HomeGoods

Monday Bliss: Clear Your Space with Incense

Welcome to Monday Bliss. Each Monday I post an idea for something to do help convert Blahs into Bliss. This week, make sure you go all the way in rejuvenating your space.

Clear Your Space with Incense

Have you been doing any decluttering lately? I’ve been writing quite a bit, as have others, about this subject, because it’s that Spring Cleaning time of year.

When you clear out the physical clutter that’s bogging down the energy in your space, it’s important to take those efforts one step further and clear any energetic clutter that’s lingering. Space clearing with incense is one way to get rid of this negative energy, giving your space, and you, a lift.

Step-by-Step

1. After you remove clutter (things you don’t love, want or need), clean the physical dirt/dust from an area

2. Follow that up with burning incense in the space. Choose a clean-burning incense, without synthetic scents added. I like Nag Champa  or Balsam Fir incense from Paine

3. Walk around the room, concentrating on the corners, as negative energy tends to collect there. Visualize all negativity being neutralized

4. Open a window, to allow the negative energy to move out of the room

So…where are you going to clear energetic clutter this week?
Your bedroom, office, living room? Let me know your results.

Fast Feng Shui: Place Amethyst to Attract Wealth

Want money to magnetize to you? Don’t we all…

Here’s a quick feng shui adjustment for the Wealth Area of your home or office:  Place a piece of amethyst there – the primary gemstone said to activate/enhance the energy of this area.

According to Gemstone Feng Shui by Sandra Kynes, amethyst has the power to enhance prosperity – bringing about good luck and manifesting change. So if you’re experiencing a lack of flow, or are stuck in a financial rut – placing this gemstone with the right intentions could help.

If you’re new to feng shui, you can find the Wealth area by using the feng shui map called The Bagua.

The Bagua

Place this map over your space with the lower portion lining up with the entrance.

Doing so, the Wealth Gua would be located in the back left corner of the room.

Important Notes:
1. Before you add a piece of amethyst to the Wealth area or do any other feng shui adjustment, you must ensure your clutter is cleared out. Clutter is the #1 inhibitor of good feng shui.

It blocks the flow of chi, so any amount of feng shui enhancements you do will be limited by it. Remember, a messy office with a piece of amethyst still doesn’t really have good feng shui.

2. Placing amethyst in your Wealth area (or any feng shui adjustment you do) must be accompanied by your envisioning the results, and believing them. Otherwise they probably won’t work. Be conscious about what energy you’re putting behind them.

Why Mercury Retrograde is a Good Time to Declutter

Happy Spring!

Although we’ve been having weather like early summer here in Minnesota (80 degrees last week!) today marks the Spring Equinox. From a Feng Shui 5 Element perspective, we’re transitioning from the Water element of winter – a time for reflection, going within – to the Wood element of Spring. With the Wood energy of upward growth and pioneering spirit, it’s generally a good time to charge forward and start new things.

But hold on just a minute – from an astrological perspective, it’s NOT a good time to start any major projects.

Right now, the planet  Mercury is retrograde, which means it appears to be moving backwards. Because of the energetics of this cosmic effect, it’s a time to review and revise, not launch anything new.

Therefore, big initiatives being inadvisable right now (at least until Mercury goes direct April 5) it’s still the perfect time for decluttering and organizing in your home. It’s a chance to review what you have, what you really need, and revise according to what goals you have to start fresh this spring. With the energy of the old out of the way, you’ll surely be ready to launch something big.

Monday Bliss: Clean Your Car

Welcome to Monday Bliss. Each Monday I post an idea for something to do help convert Blahs into Bliss. This week, take a space that often gets overlooked and make it feel new again.

Clean Your Car

Some of us spend a good chunk of time in our cars. Whether commuting or being the mom-taxi, it’s just as important to keep the interior of your car clean and inviting as it is to keep your home that way.

However, our vehicles often get neglected. Why is that? You wouldn’t let garbage collect on the floor in your living room, or leave a coffee spill on your kitchen counter for three months.

Since winter is on its way out, it’s a good time to give a good clean-out and freshen-up to the contraption that takes you everywhere you want to go. Click  here for some how-to’s for cleaning it and keeping the stuff it carries around organized.

Spring Decluttering Checklist

It’s getting to be that time of year – have you gotten the spring cleaning bug yet? Any strong urges to declutter?

When the weather starts to warm up, it’s natural for us to want to move stuff OUT. Winter’s given us the time to sit with things, and reflect on what really matters. Now it’s time to purge the old and recreate space, in line with just that.

Is decluttering an overwhelming task for you? Does it seem like there’s so much stuff you don’t know where to start? (That’s also natural.)

My best advice is to start on paper. Begin by making a list. Focus first on the main level of your home. Walk around, observe, and make notes of what areas need decluttering – chunk it down as much as possible.

Where do you have too much stuff/stuff you don’t need?

FOR EXAMPLE:

Entry

  • Coats, hats & mittens in closet
  • Boot & shoe rack
  • Top of washer/dryer

Living Room

  • DVD cupboard
  • Magazine rack

 Kitchen

  • Pile of papers
  • Expired pantry items

Then once you’ve made your list of the areas you want to focus on  decluttering, write down keywords/ideas about what you want your space to look and feel like when it’s done. This’ll serve as your motivation. (This is a crucial step for your success – don’t skip this one!)

Besides just crossing items off a list, you’ll have the satisfaction of creating a space that meets your needs, in the here and now.
